Mountain hiking dangers
Every year, an average of 42 people die while hiking in Switzerland, according to the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU). However, many risks can be reduced with good preparation.
Many Swiss hikers underestimate the danger of hard old snow, on which it is easy to slip. Time and again, therefore, tricky situations arise in the mountains because risks are underestimated and demanding routes are chosen.
On average, 42 people from Switzerland die each year while hiking and mountain walking, around 30,000 are injured, 5000 of them seriously or moderately.
A mountain hike should therefore be carefully planned and the route chosen according to one's own abilities. It is also important to choose the right equipment from head to toe: for example, sturdy hiking boots with a good grip, as well as warm and weatherproof clothing. However, it is important to make sure that everyone in the group is still fit enough, for example if the weather changes.
Against this background, the BFU also raises awareness on its campaign: the hike should be planned carefully and the appropriate equipment should be chosen, in addition, one should always remain attentive.
