Cardiovascular: Younger people are also at risk

Risk factors for later cardiovascular disease often become apparent at a young age.

A high abdominal girth and poor cholesterol levels put you at high risk for cardiovascular disease later in life.

The evaluations of the Swiss Health Day 2015 show that it is mainly the over-45s who are concerned about their cardiovascular risk. Younger people hardly benefit from the free offer - even though they often have important risk factors that are not in the green zone.

In particular, the value of the "good" HDL cholesterol is often too low in people under 40. If the value of "bad" LDL cholesterol is too high at the same time, this already means a risk for later diseases. The abdominal circumference is also too high for some even at this age: at 20% for women and 10% for men. According to the organizers of the Health Day, these factors are problematic in that HDL levels tend to decrease and abdominal girth tends to increase at older ages.

However, poor values are not irreversible: plenty of exercise, also in everyday life, a balanced diet and giving up smoking increase HDL values and reduce obesity.
