Prevent heat emergencies

A heatwave is currently sweeping Switzerland. Measures help to prevent emergencies.

High temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heat damage such as sunstroke, heat cramp and heat collapse, and in extreme cases even to life-threatening heat stroke.

Heidi Vock, founder of Emergency training Switzerlandgives SafetyPlus tips on prevention:

  • Drink regularly, even if you are not yet thirsty
  • Avoid direct sunlight from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Move outdoor work and sport to the morning or evening hours
  • Sun protection: use sun cream with a high SPF; wear sunglasses and light-colored headgear
  • Refresh your body regularly - for example with a water sprayer
  • Wear loose, light-colored, breathable clothing made of cotton or other natural fibers
  • Do not leave people or animals in parked cars

She also advises companies to email their employees tips on heat prevention, provide free mineral water and fruit and hand out light-colored sun caps as promotional gifts.
