High-bay racking system: VDI guideline revised
High-bay racking systems are subject to special requirements in terms of fire protection due to the high concentration of materials and the limited accessibility for firefighting. The revised guideline VDI 3564 Part 1 describes a risk-appropriate compilation of fire protection measures.
Due to the special design of a high-bay warehouse, close cooperation between all parties responsible for safety and fire protection is already useful and necessary during the design phase, as the VDI emphasizes. When drawing up the fire protection concept, it also proves advantageous to involve a fire protection expert right from the start of the project.
The VDI 3564 Sheet 1 "Fire protection; recommendations for high-bay racking systems" applies to the planning, construction and operation of high-bay racking systems. The recommendations in the guideline describe essential points that must be taken into account in a fire protection certificate or a protection concept for a high-bay warehouse. The protective measures described are interrelated and only effective in their entirety, writes the VDI. After considering the basic principles, risk characteristics and protection goals, the guideline goes on to describe measures in structural, technical and organizational fire protection.
