Every 6th young person has already had a commuting accident

Almost one-third (31 percent) of 16- to 25-year-olds have already been in a dangerous situation on their way to work or training. This is the result of a representative survey conducted for the prevention program "Jugend will sich-er-leben" (JWSL) on behalf of the state associations of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV).

Also the topic "Distraction" was part of the survey. For example, more than a third (37 percent) of young people said they sometimes feel unfocused, their thoughts are elsewhere or they are distracted by other things, such as their smartphone. This shows the current increasing relevance of the Distraction theme.

Many young people are unsure whether a commuting accident must be reported and which doctor is responsible. Half (50 percent) of those surveyed do not know that they must seek treatment from a transit doctor approved by the employers' liability insurance association or accident insurance fund. According to the survey, more than two-thirds (69 percent) of 16- to 25-year-olds would like more information on the topic of "commuting accidents."

Youth-will-live-itself

This year, the "Jugend-will-er-leben" prevention program for vocational school students is dedicated to the topic "Recognizing hazards, preventing commuting accidents". Vocational school students account for 42.4 percent of fatal road accidents in school accident insurance. This makes them the number one risk group for commuting accidents. Making trainees aware of the dangers in road traffic and showing them how to avoid dangerous situations is therefore an important task for the 2017/18 prevention year.

JWSL offers a media package of instructional design, instructional design, four YouTube clips, five animated films, contest and competition for the use of teachers and trainers at vocational schools and in companies. The topics are:

  • Distraction in the Road traffic
  • Risk perception
  • Emotions and driving behavior
  • Basic knowledge of commuting accidents
