Safe Routes to School Campaign Continues

After the "Rad steht, Kind geht" (bike stops, child walks) school travel campaign was successfully carried out throughout Switzerland last year, it is starting again with a new edition at the beginning of the 2016 school year.

High-visibility vests, information for vehicle drivers and training courses are intended to make the way to school safer again this year.

Just in time for the start of school in 2016, TCS, bfu - the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention and the police, in collaboration with municipalities and schools, are once again launching the "Rad steht, Kind geht" ("Bike stops, child walks") campaign. The central concern of the campaign is the message to vehicle drivers that children only cross the road when the wheels of the vehicle are at a standstill. Motorized road users are urged not just to slow down at pedestrian crossings, but to stop altogether. It is almost impossible for children to correctly judge the speed and distance of vehicles. In the spirit of this awareness campaign, TV and radio spots will be broadcast again this year and more than 600 banderoles, 6,500 posters and 150,000 Post-it pads with the campaign motif will be distributed nationwide.

Safety vests and courses for a safe way to school

TCS is also distributing more than 80,000 safety vests free of charge to all first-graders throughout Switzerland. And because many children ride scooters to school, TCS is also actively involved in promoting the safe use of this form of mobility. Accordingly, the club finances special workshops in which children can learn the technical skills and are educated about the dangers and risks.

Good balance of the campaign carried out so far

The "Rad steht, Kind geht" ("Bike stops, child walks") campaign for getting to school has been running successfully since 2015. According to a representative survey, the campaign has so far been perceived and understood by over 90% of motorists. In addition, the campaign, which also involves prominent ambassadors such as Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard, received an award from the Children's Parliament of the City of Lucerne.
