Contrary to common stereotypes, women cause accidents much less often than men. Thus, female drivers on Swiss roads were responsible for a quarter of all traffic accidents in 2019, in 13,915 of the 53,528 of the registered cases, according to the TCS. Men were responsible for 34,665 traffic accidents in the same year, the statistics show.

Four times fewer ticket withdrawals for women

In the case of serious offenses, the driver's license may be revoked. The extrapolations also show that women have their licenses revoked four times less than men. Statistically, men caused the more serious traffic accidents. In 2019, for example, 79,921 driver's licenses were revoked. Men were affected in 80.63 percent of cases and women in 19.37 percent. Among women, the least affected by license revocations were those under 20 (426), those aged 65 to 69 (479) and those aged 70 to 74 (550), whereas among men, those aged 70 to 74 (1,621) had the fewest license revocations.

The trend of low traffic accidents caused by women is reflected in all cantons. In detail, the TCS lists the following figures for the cantons:

In absolute numbers, 104 accidents were caused by women compared to 230 by men in Appenzell Ausserrhoden, 37 compared to 59 in Appenzell Innerrhoden, 705 compared to 1543 in Aargau, 299 compared to 703 in Basel-Landschaft, 201 compared to 535 in Basel-Stadt, 1549 vs. 3650 in the canton of Bern, 293 versus 739 in the canton of Fribourg, 606 versus 1,740 in the canton of Geneva, 88 versus 212 in Glarus, 490 versus 1577 in Grisons, 82 versus 196 in Jura, 506 versus 1282 in the canton of Lucerne, 225 versus 521 in the canton of Neuchâtel, 61 versus 146 in Nidwalden, 70 versus 173 in Obwalden, 698 versus 1,829 in the canton of St. Gallen, 141 versus 275 in the canton of Schaffhausen, 248 versus 527 in Schwyz, 429 versus 935 in the canton of Solothurn, 1036 versus 2369 in Ticino, 358 versus 785 in Thurgau, 31 versus 227 in Uri, 246 versus 782 in Valais, 1,240 versus 3157 in the canton of Vaud, 214 versus 478 in the canton of Zug and 3958 versus 9995 in the canton of Zurich.
