SME protection against cybercrime
According to the study, only one third of SMEs in Germany have a holistic IT security concept. At the same time, SMEs are often market leaders in their segments, are considered technologically innovative and therefore offer a worthwhile target for cyber attacks. In order to create a standard that specifically takes into account the IT security requirements of SMEs, the certification specialist VdS has developed guidelines for cyber security.
"With the publication of the VdS 3473 cyber standard, we are closing a significant security gap," emphasizes VdS-Managing Director Robert Reinermann. "Cyber security is the fire protection of the 21st century. That's why medium-sized companies need a level of security that can be implemented cost-effectively and practically. These requirements are met by the VdS 3473 guidelines, which were developed with the help of our certification experts and information security experts, among others," Robert Reinermann continues.
To prepare for certification according to VdS 3473, VdS-approved cyber security consultants are available to assist interested companies. In addition, the free web tool "VdS Quick Check" and the "Quick Audit" on site provide an easy introduction to certified information security. "Our multi-stage procedure and the modules of the VdS concept for cyber security can usefully supplement risk management in companies with the aspect of information security," explains Robert Reinermann. For companies, certified data security based on VdS 3473 results in tangible competitive advantages. For example, customers and suppliers can trust that VdS-certified companies guarantee minimum standards in the area of data security and delivery capability.
At the same time, a calculable risk based on binding guidelines is a central prerequisite for insuring residual cyber risks. Against this background, the VdS 3473 guidelines also provide impetus for the insurance industry to develop cyber policies that enable individual insurance protection.
