Knee osteoarthritis is a widespread form of arthritis. Its frequency increases with age. It affects 30 to 60 % of the over-60s. The Rheumaliga Schweiz is organizing the national action week "Knackpunkt Knie - Kniearthrose verstehen und behandeln". Visitors can expect lectures on the causes and treatment options for knee osteoarthritis, personal advice and practical tips from proven experts.
At the free events, specialists from rheumatology and surgery explain the medical background of knee osteoarthritis and its treatment methods. Physiotherapists provide information on the importance of exercise and joint protection. During the breaks, visitors can get personal advice.
Risk factors
Age and genetic predispositions are among the risk factors for a Osteoarthritis. The first signs are pain on start-up and strain after sitting for a long time, when climbing stairs or walking downhill. Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms of osteoarthritis, with women being affected more often than men. Factors such as obesity, lack of exercise and overuse also play a role. The Pain are caused by the periosteum, the joint capsule, its inner skin as well as other soft tissues, as these have numerous pain receptors.
Active against osteoarthritis
To keep the joints healthy, regular exercise is important. The Rheumatism League recommends forms of exercise that are easy on the joints, such as walking, hiking, Nordic walking, cycling or aquafit. Exercises from physiotherapy have proven to be particularly effective. This approach is therefore recommended internationally as the first choice against osteoarthritis.
