Compatible alarm systems

Because more and more providers of burglar alarm systems are on the market, there is now a confusing mess. Ultimately, only the thieves benefit from this. Now developers of alarm systems are getting a tool for compatible interfaces.

Hundreds of system types in a wide variety of configurations report to the control centers and intervention services using a wide variety of communication protocols. In practice, this means that, depending on the manufacturer-specific protocol of the intrusion detection system (EMS), these service providers have to make cost-intensive upgrades, using additional software or even special hardware. In addition to all this effort, the coupling of heterogeneous systems is known to be particularly prone to failure - clear beneficiaries of the latent confusion: the burglars.

Compatible interfaces

Against this risk factor for successful burglary protection goes VdS now available - with precise assistance for the design of all-round compatible interfaces. The guidelines VdS 2465-4, "Transmission Protocol for Hazard Messages - Protocol Description Interfaces S6/S7", coordinated with the police and other experts in the security market, offer developers of alarm transmission devices a uniform basic framework for transmitting variable data structures to various communication partners. The user data is represented by XML (Extensible Markup Language), a universally understandable recording language for hierarchically structured information. With a defined connection setup, alarm receiving points (S6) and alarm and intervention services (S7) can now exchange messages in a wide variety of formats - regardless of whether they originate from the VdS 2465 protocol family or from one of the numerous third-party protocols (e.g. Telim, SIA or Contact-ID). The important flexibility is maintained, because the raw message data and other additional information are transmitted as well, if desired. The recipient thus has the choice of evaluating this raw data or preferring to use the uniform message structure of the established VdS 2465 protocol.

Harald Mebus, VdS technical manager for security services, emphasizes: "The interface protocol agreed with the manufacturers is a crucial aid to increasing the compatibility of all systems within the security chain. A wide variety of users can thus make their optimal contribution to the fight against crime without having to make time-consuming changes or expensive additional purchases. The new VdS 2465-4 increases reliability and reduces the costs of intervention disposition as well as preparation."
