Leaks Under Control
What everyone is familiar with from their own kitchen also happens at work. A package is damaged or a container tips over, and solid or liquid substances spill out. But while a quick wipe-down is usually enough at home, such incidents in the workplace pose significant risks: chemical burns and poisoning, fires, and even explosions.

6-Step Process
The following steps are intended to provide a structured approach. Priorities will vary depending on the situation and the substance released. Whether you should first stop the leak, put on respiratory protection, or alert the fire department depends on the specific circumstances. Personal safety must always be a priority. In the event of acute danger—such as from toxic fumes or explosive atmospheres—evacuate the area immediately.
1. Immediate Measures
Assess the risks (substance, hazard level, amount spilled) and, if necessary, alert coworkers; make an emergency call; notify the plant fire department; put on protective equipment
2. Stop the leak
Locate the source of the leak and stop any further leakage; prevent the liquid from spreading onto water-permeable surfaces by using oil booms, absorbent booms, or similar barriers.

3. Cordon off the hazardous area
Prevent access to the contaminated area to avoid further spread via the soles of shoes or vehicle tires.
4. Identify the substance
If the substance is unknown, consult the packaging, labeling, safety data sheet, etc., and, based on the warning statements, hazard classes, H- and P-phrases, etc., to implement additional protective measures if necessary (poison control center, respiratory protection, appropriate chemical protective clothing, etc.)
5. Disposal and Cleaning
Collect solids with as little dust as possible; absorb liquids with absorbent materials; ensure good ventilation in the presence of vapors or gases (open windows, use exhaust fans). If necessary, check the accident site for residues to ensure that decontamination was successful; dispose of all materials and residues properly.
A Valuable Aid: Binding Agents
Absorbents are often the best choice for absorbing liquids. Whether laid out as a textile mat or scattered as granules, absorbents quickly soak up unwanted liquid substances, thereby enabling cleanup and safe disposal. The product range is extensive, including oil, chemical, and universal absorbents, available as mats, rolls, pads, or in coil form. Key criteria include absorption capacity, absorbency, durability, and, last but not least, disposal costs.
Warning: If the spilled substance is unknown, do not use water to clean it up, as this can trigger violent reactions—for example, with alkali metals, metal hydrides, or strong acids. Cleaning agents must also be suitable; otherwise, the cleaning process itself can create new hazards. For example, if acidic agents come into contact with chlorine-containing substances, highly toxic chlorine gas is produced, which can cause chemical burns to the respiratory tract even at low concentrations. An expert assessment, appropriate protective measures, and qualified personnel are now required. Under no circumstances should the cleanup of spills following a leak be simply delegated to untrained cleaning staff.
6. Follow-up
Document the accident and notify the relevant parties (supervisors, management, and, if necessary, authorities). Begin investigating the cause: Damage during transport? Technical defects? Unsuitable storage conditions? Incorrect loading of an industrial truck? Inadequate securing of the cargo? Unsealed container? Unsuitable container? Defective or damaged seal, closure, spout, etc.?
The handling of the incident should also be critically reviewed afterward: Were the binding agents appropriate, and did those involved respond appropriately? Depending on the findings, it is important to refine emergency plans, optimize emergency equipment, and make targeted adjustments to procedural guidelines. Training sessions can simulate a leak involving harmless substances and allow participants to practice safe procedures.
