More health literacy for learners

The new "ready4life" project is designed to help learners cope better with stress and resist addiction. The lung leagues of various cantons are behind the project.

With ready4life five cantonal lung leagues are launching a health promotion project that links to learners' digital habits. It encourages them to give up smoking and strengthens their life skills: these include dealing with stress properly, strengthening social skills and the ability to resist addiction.

Individualized coaching via SMS

The project takes advantage of the widespread use of electronic media by young people: Learners can participate in ready4life using a tablet, smartphone or computer. Individualized SMS coaching supports them in their efforts to lead a smoke- and addiction-free life.

The program has three main focuses: BE YOU: stress management and dealing with own feelings BE SMART: dealing with behavior of others, developing own opinion, training communication skills BE HEALTHY: knowledge about tobacco use, marketing influences, social norms.

Reward beckons

After an internet-based initial survey, learners benefit from ongoing support via SMS coaching for 6 months. It is designed to encourage them to develop new skills in dealing with stress and their own feelings. Smokers are encouraged to rethink their smoking attitudes and habits. In particular, the program strengthens the formation of one's own attitude and resilience to addiction. Participation in ready4life is rewarded: Active involvement in the program offers the chance to win attractive prizes.

Participation in ready4Life is free of charge. Following an evaluation of the pilot project, the program will be optimized and implemented in other cantons starting in the 2017/18 school year.

The pilot project was developed in collaboration with the Swiss Institute for Addiction and Health Research (ISGF) and the Institute for Technology Management at the University of St. Gallen (ITEM-HSG). The national coordination of the project is the responsibility of the Swiss Lung League.
