More fatalities and serious injuries on Swiss roads

In the first half of 2022, a total of 116 lost their lives in a road accident on Swiss roads. 1746 people were seriously injured during this period.

The number of fatalities on Swiss roads increased significantly in the first half of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. A total of 116 people lost their lives. This compares with 87 people last year. The number of people seriously injured also increased from 1709 in the first half of 2021 to 1746 people in the first half of 2022.

Passenger car occupants

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of occupants of passenger cars killed in the first half of 2022 increased from 27 to 37. 346 occupants of passenger cars were seriously injured in accidents (2021: 293 seriously injured). By age group, there was a decrease in the number of people seriously injured in accidents (total of fatalities and serious injuries), particularly among 18- to 34-year-olds. There was an increase above all in the age groups 55 and older.

E-bike riding

With an e-bike, 15 people died in the first half of 2022 (2021: 9 killed); 220 people were seriously injured (2021: 254 seriously injured). With a fast e-bike, 43 people had serious accidents (no fatalities, 43 serious injuries); with a slow e-bike, 192 people (15 fatalities, 177 serious injuries). Among 55- to 64-year-olds, the number of serious accidents involving a slow e-bike increased from 38 to 47 compared to the previous year; among 14- to 54-year-olds, there was a decrease.

The half-yearly statistics of road accidents are based on the Astra road accident information system. It records accidents reported by the police on public roads or squares involving at least one motor vehicle, bicycle or vehicle-like device. The results of the semi-annual statistics are provisional. The definitive figures will be published in spring 2023.
