On October 1, 2012, the revised Sports Promotion Act came into force. In the objectives of the law, the "prevention of accidents during sports and exercise" is explicitly listed. And in the accompanying ordinance, the organizers of Y+S offers, the Y+S leaders as well as those responsible for the promotion of adult sports are obliged to take the necessary measures to prevent accidents.

The BFU and the FOSPO have responded swiftly to the demand for measures to ensure safe sports. A specific information sheet has been produced for each sport - from skiing to cycling or swimming to horseback riding. These tips on accident prevention are available on the following websites www.bfu.ch, www.jugendundsport.ch and www.mobilesport.ch.

As safe as possible

The goal of the 53 fact sheets, which summarize the relevant accident prevention concerns for the leaders, is clear: The sport led should be as safe as possible. The standards set give the Y+S leaders the necessary basis to actually fulfill their duty of care and to take responsibility for the participants. Thus, not only the leaders (for example of a ski camp) feel safe, but also the children and adolescents to be cared for. This is exactly what the legislator wanted to achieve.

In concrete terms, (selected) prevention tips (for the example of skiing/snowboarding) look like this: "Y+S instructors teach the FIS rules of conduct and SKUS guidelines and ensure compliance with them. They check the snow sports equipment (e.g. bindings, edges) and gear (e.g. clothing, goggles) together with the participants. They ensure that the required protective equipment (helmet, optional knee and back protectors) is worn correctly."
