Tired employees cost companies dearly

A lack of sleep among employees costs companies dearly. Those who don't start work well rested are not only less motivated and less focused, but can even cost their employer customers and thus important sales. This is the result of recent research at the University of Michigan.

Customers want sympathy

Unrested employees, according to the scientists in their surveys, exhibit concentration problems and are more often conspicuous for their impulsive behavior toward colleagues and customers. In the study of the researchers from Michigan 40 test subjects between 18 and 50 were observed for three nights. They were subjected to a strict nightly schedule in order to later test realistic work behavior.

After the disturbed night, all participants had to solve various tasks on the computer. At random, some watched a nature video in between, others were allowed to take a nap for 60 minutes. After that, more tasks had to be solved. Result: Those who were given time to sleep were able to solve the tasks more effectively. The others, on the other hand, appeared demotivated and occasionally impulsive or frustrated.

Preventing outbursts of anger

The work of the University of Michigan follows a series of previous findings and confirms assumptions from emotion research: Staying awake for a long time makes it increasingly difficult for people to control negative emotions. Emotional outbursts can thus no longer be avoided as they can when the mind is clear.
