The curve in the statistics of the Federal Office for the Environment has been pointing steeply upward for years: There is more and more damage caused by natural hazards in Switzerland (cf. here). In 2017, for example, the figure was over three billion Swiss francs. Experts predict that the frequency and intensity of extreme events will increase even more as climate change progresses. In the Alpine region, the permafrost line is rising, leading to increased landslides, debris flows, and rock and mountain falls. In the lowlands, storms, floods and inundations will increase. Earthquakes and radon radiation are also natural hazards that should not be underestimated.

Assessing risks correctly

Homeowners, entrepreneurs, architects, real estate managers or real estate and facility managers are well advised to consider the possible natural hazards in Switzerland. Only those who are aware of their effects can reduce or even prevent damage. But correctly assessing the risks of natural hazards requires a great deal of specialist knowledge.

That is why Zurich Insurance, in collaboration with the Swiss Society of Engineers and Architects (sia), the Swiss Association for Facility Management and Maintenance (fmpro), the Swiss Homeowners Association (HEV) and the trade journal SicherheitsForum, is launching a new series of events on natural hazard prevention in the "Umwelt Arena" (see box).

Expertise from experts

At the event, industry experts and damage specialists will show how to protect their properties from natural hazards such as floods, landslides, avalanches or debris flows and how vulnerable a site is. Participants will also learn the "Zurich Natural Hazards Radar": The web-based analysis tool was developed in cooperation with the engineers and geologists of Geotest AG and the support of the federal government and the cantons.

Real estate, home and apartment owners, as well as builders, architects and planners, property managers, real estate and facility managers use the tool to analyze hazards and recommend and implement necessary protective measures.

The series of events organized by Zurich Insurance in the "Umwelt Arena Schweiz" in Spreitenbach is free of charge. In addition to the presentations, there will be a guided tour of the "Umwelt Arena" beforehand. A networking aperitif is offered after the presentations.
