New campaign against e-bike accidents
More and more older people are having accidents on e-bikes. A new campaign by the Zurich Cantonal Police aims to counteract this trend.
The recently published 2015 traffic accident statistics have shown that the number of e-bike accidents has once again increased sharply. An above-average number of people over the age of 65 are seriously injured in these accidents.
Sales of e-bikes have increased sharply in recent years, especially compared to bicycles. Parallel to this trend, accidents involving e-bikes have also increased sharply. Of the e-bike riders involved in serious accidents, 55 percent are over 65 years old.
The Zurich Cantonal Police is now taking various measures as part of its "Fewer Senior Accidents" campaign. In particular, courses are to be held to make e-bike riders aware of the special features of electric bikes and to train them in riding techniques. In addition, posters are to be used to raise awareness of the dangers among all road users. The aim of the campaign, which will run for several years, is to reduce the number of e-bike accidents involving senior citizens.
