According to the national hazard and risk analysis "Disasters and Emergencies Switzerland" (KNS), earthquakes are among the highest-risk hazards.

With the title "Consideration of earthquakes in major accident prevention" the FOEN publishes a well-founded guide to the risk-based assessment and reduction of earthquake-related incidents. The publication is aimed in particular at owners and planners of chemical plants as well as cantonal enforcement authorities. It closes a long-standing gap in the application of the Major Accidents Ordinance (MAO) by providing concrete procedures and assessment criteria for earthquake safety - including monitoring by the FOEN.
