New technical standards in telecommunications monitoring
The federal government's telecommunications monitoring will be adapted to the new standards of the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI) in February. This also involves adjustments to monitoring measures for the 5G network.
According to a statement from the federal government, the technical standards for Swiss telecommunications surveillance are being adapted to the new standards of the European Telecommunications Institute (ETSI). With the current amendment to the ordinance, the technical details of "request and response interfaces of three system components" will be adapted, according to the federal government, and certain monitoring measures will also be adapted to the 5G mobile network.
The Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) is thus putting the revised Ordinance on the Implementation of Postal and Telecommunications Traffic (VR-ÜPF) into force on February 1, 2021.
The standards of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), on which Switzerland bases its legal foundations and revises them from time to time, are also decisive for further technological development. These now make it possible for all telecommunications service providers to make the technical adjustments needed to implement the law enforcement authorities and the federal intelligence service.
