New destruction facility for secret documents
In Bern, the largest waste paper sorting plant with a destruction facility for secret documents and data recently went into operation in a high-security building.
Operated is the new "Recycling City" in Bern-Wankdorf by the companies Alpabern, Papirec and the sensitive data specialist Datarec, which all contribute to the Barec Group belong. With an area of 7500 m², it is the largest waste paper sorting plant in Switzerland.
Secure destruction in high security building
Secure destruction of confidential documents and data media is becoming increasingly important for banks, insurance companies, military and civil authorities, as well as industrial and commercial companies. For this purpose, a high-tech, automatic shredding and compacting plant was built in the "Recycling City". With a capacity of 5000 kilograms per hour, it shreds paper documents and folders into particles with a diameter of 30 millimeters, according to supplier Hunkeler Systeme. This particle size corresponds to security level P3 according to DIN 66399. In the new RS100 four-shaft shredder, the particle size can be set finer by changing the corresponding screens, thus achieving security level 4, Hunkeler says.
Video recorded security gates
Datarec's partner is the security service provider Securitas, which carries out all collection and transport services. Datarec customers collect the confidential documents in roll carts. Delivered to the high-security building, they are emptied onto a belt via a tipping mechanism and fed into the shredder. A baler compresses the shredded documents into bales weighing up to 500 kilograms, with a bale cross-section of 1000 by 700 millimeters. Finally, the bales are ejected via a roller conveyor and sent for waste paper recycling.
Regarding security standards, Markus Scheck, CEO of Datarec AG, says: "The new high-security building for the destruction of confidential documents is built entirely in concrete, alarm-protected and video-recorded. Security gates and monitoring equipment guarantee seamless security."
High quality requirements
In addition to confidential documents, "Recycling City" also handles normal waste paper - a total of 70,000 tons per year. Urs Schenker, Alpabern president, says: "As the first sorting plant in Switzerland with two near-infrared sorting modules, the high-tech facility can meet the highest quality requirements of the paper industry." By the way: The "Recycling City" is also operated in an environmentally friendly way. More than 1400 photovoltaic modules provide for its own power generation.
