Cybersecurity: New federal office by 2024
The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) will be transformed into a federal office on January 1, 2024, and transferred from the Federal Department of Finance to Viola Amherd's DDPS department.
At the beginning of December 2022, the Federal Council decided to subordinate the NCSC to the DDPS as a civilian federal office. In connection with this, it has now voted to transfer the personnel and material resources of CHF 13.7 million allocated for this purpose in the General Secretariat of the FDF to the new Federal Office for Cybersecurity in the DDPS as of 1 January 2024.
Perform support tasks independently
In addition, the new federal office will need financial resources for the support tasks of finance, human resources, IT and legal affairs, the media release states. These cross-sectional tasks are currently mainly performed by the General Secretariat of the FDF, to which the NCSC is affiliated as a division. According to the statement, the new federal office, as an independent administrative unit of the DDPS, should be able to perform these tasks itself. For this reason, the Federal Council has decided to increase its budget by 0.8 million francs as of Jan. 1, 2024. This increase includes personnel expenses for four additional positions.
In order to keep the additional resource requirements for these support tasks as low as possible, synergies with the General Secretariat of the DDPS are to be exploited, as is emphasized in conclusion.
