In the neighboring area to the current laboratory for fire detection technology in Cologne, VdS has realized a laboratory tailored to its own needs in a hall of around 600 m2 . One focus was on optimizing and making the best possible use of the space: "With the experience gained over the past decades, we were able to arrange the high-quality test stands in such a way that we can now ensure even more efficiently coordinated processes," says VdS Managing Director Thomas Urban.

One of the largest laboratories in Europe

The VdS laboratory is one of the largest laboratories in its field in Europe and tests the entire range of products used in the fire alarm sector - from smoke alarms for the private sector to entire fire alarm control centers. With this range and complexity of testing, the requirements for the space were very special, he said. "The neighboring building offered an excellent opportunity to meet our requirements. This means that the safety of products can be measured quickly and comprehensively now and in the future," says Urban.

The expansion of the hall areas was divided into a total of two phases. The first construction phase, the expansion of the floor level, will be completed with the relocation of the laboratory equipment on July 31, 2020. Preparatory work for the implementation of the second construction phase, the construction of an upper floor, has already begun and will be completed in 2021, the company writes.
