Emergency call by text: Federal Council modernizes emergency call system

In future, the public will be able to contact the police, fire department and ambulance service not only by voice call, but also in writing via real-time text. The function is already integrated into the latest smartphones - neither an app nor a login is required. For people with hearing impairments in particular, this means direct, uncomplicated access to the emergency services.

However, technical and organizational requirements must be met before the function can be used: The mobile networks must be fully digitized, the alarm centers equipped accordingly and the staff trained. The exact time of availability will be announced in consultation with the emergency service centers.

Short number 142 - free help for victims of domestic violence

The short number 142 of Victim Support Switzerland has been in operation since May 1, 2026. It offers victims of domestic violence a central, free point of contact. Telecommunications service providers are obliged not to pass on any call data - confidentiality is thus guaranteed by law.

Vehicle emergency call fit for the future

The automated emergency call in vehicles is also being modernized. The regulations for the so-called «Next Generation eCall» are being adapted so that vehicle emergency calls will continue to function reliably even after the older 2G and 3G mobile phone standards are switched off.

Parliamentary demands implemented

With these measures, the Federal Council is meeting the demands of various parliamentary initiatives. Further steps in the area of emergency calls are planned as part of the upcoming revision of the Telecommunications Act.
