Petition: "Toxic company wedding" Bayer - Monsanto stop!
Bayer buys Monsanto: The corporation will dominate world trade in seeds and pesticides - to the detriment of consumers, farmers and the environment. The merger (poisonous company wedding) brings genetically modified crops and even more poison to the fields. On April 5, the EU will decide whether to approve the acquisition. Action for Rainforests et al. are calling for a "no" vote.
The $66 billion deal will create the world's largest agrochemical and seed company, controlling more than a quarter of the market. Consumers, farmers and the environment will suffer under the Market concentration suffer in the hands of a few managers:
- Monsanto earns billions of dollars with genetically modified crops (GMO), especially in North America. Now Bayer will try to push through the controversial genetic engineering in Europe as well.
- Monsanto distributes the Glyphosate plant poisonwhich, according to the World Health Organization, is "probably carcinogenic" is. The fact that the EU has granted approval for the Gift extended by five years at the end of 2017is worth hard cash for the Group.
- Bayer's growing market power is leading to further industrialization of agriculture, which relies on genetic engineering, pesticides and monocultures. The future of ecological, resource-conserving agriculture is being blocked.
- Farmers will become even more dependent on the seeds and agrochemicals of fewer producers. These will offer fewer and fewer types of cereals, for example. The world's food supply will be dominated by an oligopoly based around Bayer. A world domination of a few over the fields and plates of all is threatening.
Never before has a German company spent more money to buy a company. Bayer will do everything it can to make the billion-euro takeover profitable - and exploit its market power.
Save the Rainforest has been fighting Monsanto, one of the world's most dangerous companies, for years. Bayer is also a target of protests. The chemical company earns handsomely from pesticides used for the mass mortality of bees be held responsible. Please also call on EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager to refuse to approve the merger. On April 5 it counts!
