Pilot test with bodycam begins
On Monday, the first city police officers in Zurich will be equipped with a body camera. This is intended to provide preventive protection against violent attacks.
The Zurich City Police (Stapo) has completed the preparatory work for the implementation of the Bodycam pilot project and started using the cameras on a trial basis on February 6, 2017. The cameras are to be used when police officers stop or control private individuals in public spaces. The aim is to prevent violent or verbal assaults and document the behavior of those involved, according to a media release from the security department.
Maximum of eight cameras in use
According to information, a maximum of eight cameras will be used at the front. All police officers involved in the pilot project will be trained in the use of the body camera in accordance with the regulations issued by the city council, according to the security department. The exact duration of the pilot test is still open, as the project will be scientifically evaluated and sufficient data material must be available. The Security Department and the Zurich City Police will inform the political bodies and stakeholders as well as the public about the course of the pilot test and the findings in an appropriate form, it concludes.
