Police crime statistics 2025: fewer crimes but more violence in Switzerland

The main reason for the decline is the trend in property crimes. At 369,735 cases, they still account for around two thirds of all crimes, but fell by 3.5 percent. Thefts and fraud in particular were registered less frequently. At the same time, burglaries and thefts by intrusion rose slightly by 1.2 percent to 46,636 cases - this corresponds to an average of 128 incidents per day.

«The security situation in our country remains stable overall,» explains Matteo Cocchi, President of the Conference of Cantonal Police Commanders of Switzerland (CCPCS). At the same time, he calls for a differentiated view of the figures and emphasizes the importance of close cooperation between the police forces.

Violent crime continues to rise

While overall crime declined slightly, there was another increase in violent crimes. A total of 49,915 violent crimes were registered, which corresponds to an increase of two percent. The trend in serious violent crimes was particularly marked: These increased by 8.1 percent to 2654 cases.

The police also recorded an increase in homicides. In 2025, 55 completed homicides were recorded - ten more than in the previous year. There were also 251 attempted homicides.

The number of rapes also increased to 1402 cases. However, a comparison with previous years is only possible to a limited extent, as the legal definition of the offense has been adjusted since July 2024.

More than half of all violent crimes occurred in public spaces, and just under 44 percent in private settings.

Domestic violence remains a central problem

The development in the domestic area is particularly striking: here the police registered 22,066 crimes - an increase of 4.4%. The most common offenses include assault, threats, verbal abuse and simple bodily harm.

Of the 55 homicides, 34 occurred in the home. This means that almost two thirds of all homicides occurred in this area.

Digital crime declines slightly - phishing increases significantly

The statistics also show a slight decline in the area of digital crime. A total of 57,761 crimes with a digital component were registered - 2.2% fewer than in the previous year.

Cyber-economic crime continues to account for the largest share. Within this area, however, phishing in particular increased significantly: The number of such offenses increased by 24.9%.

In contrast, there was a decline in cases of identity fraud, fraud via online payment systems and undelivered goods in classified ad purchases.

More adults accused, fewer juveniles

The number of accused persons rose slightly to 92,147 (+0.2 percent). The development by age group is striking: While an increase of 1.9 percent was recorded for adults aged 25 and over, the number of minors accused fell by 5.3 percent.

42.1 percent of the accused persons are Swiss nationals, 32.3 percent have a permanent residence or residence permit.
