Prevention and emergency plans for gas
Switzerland wants to further improve its gas supply security and strengthen its cooperation with the European Union's gas crisis management. In accordance with European requirements and building on the report "Risk Assessment Natural Gas Supply Switzerland", the Swiss Federal Office of Energy has developed gas prevention and emergency plans.
Following the Russian-Ukrainian gas crisis of 2009, the EU strengthened its gas crisis management. Among other things, it set up a Gas Coordination Group (GCG). Since 2013, Switzerland has been invited to the meetings of the GCG on a case-by-case basis. Regulation (EU) No. 994/2010, which is currently being revised, requires EU member states to carry out a risk assessment of their natural gas supply and to draw up prevention and emergency plans. In order to further improve its security of supply and to cooperate with the GCG, Switzerland is complying with the European requirements. For example, based on the "Risk Assessment of Natural Gas Supply in Switzerland" (Link), prevention and emergency plans for natural gas have been developed. This was done in collaboration with Swissgas, the Swiss Gas Industry Association (VSG), the Federal Office for National Economic Supply and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. The report was submitted to the European Commission as well as to all neighboring countries of Switzerland and is now available in its final version. In addition to an overview of prevention and emergency measures in the gas supply and application sector, the report also lists, among other things, the various players in the gas sector and the bodies responsible in the event of an incident.
This work enables deepening of cooperation with neighboring countries and the EU. At the national level, the report serves as an information and communication tool for gas supply security issues. (SFO)
