Premiere: 1 Gbit/s via mobile network

As the first provider in Europe, Swisscom and its partner Ericsson have succeeded in transmitting data at a speed of 1 Gbit/s via the mobile network, the company writes. This represents a major step towards the introduction of even higher mobile communications speeds.

As before, the volume of data transmitted annually via the mobile network by Swisscom will be transmitted. With the transmission of 1 Gbit/s, the telecommunications company will relieve the strain on its existing mobile networks in the foreseeable future. The commercial launch of the new "LTE Advanced Pro" technology is planned for early 2017. End devices supporting this technology would most likely be presented at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona.

Successful test

Swisscom's experts have tested the transmission of 1 Gbit/s live in the mobile network. "Thanks to the close cooperation with Ericsson, we were able to celebrate the European premiere with the transmission of 1 Gbit/s at the beginning of this week. This is a success that shows me that Swisscom is on the right innovative path, " Heinz Herren, CTO and CIO Swisscom, underlines the importance of the technical innovation.

Swisscom currently supplies 4G/ LTE via 98% and 3G via 99%. More than 100 locations are already equipped with LTE advanced, which enables theoretical bandwidths of up to 300 Mbit/s there. In addition, transmission rates of max. 450 Mbit/s are already possible at some selected locations in buildings.

The intermediate step before 5G

The network is constantly being expanded. Until the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) is standardized and introduced, Swisscom will continue to improve its existing network with carrier aggregation, the interconnection of several frequencies. The fourth mobile communications generation will be further developed into LTE Advanced Pro, the provider said. This would allow transmission rates of max. 1Gbit/s download, max. 150 Mbit/s upload to be used.
