Revised NIV to enter into force soon
Recently, the Federal Council decided that the revised NIV will come into force on January 1, 2018. This is also intended to improve the safety of low-voltage installations.

The Ordinance on Low-Voltage Electrical Installations (Low-Voltage Installation Ordinance, NIV) provides the legal framework for the entire electrical installation and electrical control trade. New installation materials and tools, economic pressure, the increasing number of foreign market participants, etc. are just some of the challenges facing the electrical installation trade today. With the now adopted Partial revision of the NIV the legal basis will be adapted to the current framework conditions, as the Federal Council writes.
More security
The amendments and additions serve to maintain and, if possible, improve the safety of low-voltage electrical installations, the authority said. In particular, the requirements for the issuance of an installation license, the regulations on the organization of installation work, as well as the regulations on enforcement and supervision by the Federal Inspectorate for Heavy Current Installations would be adapted.
The revised NIV provides the electrical installation trade with a practical and up-to-date legal basis, with which the existing high safety level of electrical installations in Switzerland can be maintained at the same time, as stated in the Federal Council's communication.
