Faster through the security check

During the summer months, Zurich Airport always records higher passenger numbers. As a result, there are always longer waiting times, especially at the security checkpoint. This could often be avoided - if travelers were properly prepared.

Security is also a top priority at Zurich Airport. The regulations for security control are specified to the airport operator by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), which in turn is based on the regulations of the European Union and adopts them for all national airports in Switzerland.

The amount of carry-on luggage allowed varies by airline and flight class, but the security regulations are the same for all travelers. It is worth knowing the most important security regulations and preparing your hand luggage accordingly. This will ensure a faster security check.

Packing liquids correctly and placing them on the belt
Liquids - this includes gels or sprays - are only permitted in containers up to a maximum of 100 milliliters each. These containers must be placed in a 1-liter bag. One 1-liter bag is allowed per person. Liquids over 100 milliliters are allowed only if they fall into the categories of specialty foods, baby food or medications. Duty-free liquids over 100 milliliters are only allowed if they are carried along together with the receipt in sealed bags, which must comply with special regulations. Anyone shopping in duty-free stores at Zurich Airport will automatically receive their goods properly packaged. All liquids must be presented at the security checkpoint. Permitted liquids are checked separately.

Electronic devices and batteries
Electronic devices such as laptops, tablets or cameras must also be presented at the security checkpoint. Loose batteries and powerbanks must be transported in hand luggage and secured against short circuits. This is achieved by either covering the terminals with tape or by placing each loose battery individually in a protective cover (e.g. plastic bag). For batteries of 100 watt-hours or more, there is a limit of two batteries per passenger. Energy sources with a capacity of more than 160 watt-hours are prohibited.

Pointed objects and fireworks
Also prohibited in carry-on baggage are any type of scissors and knives with a blade length of more than six centimeters, but these items may be taken in checked baggage. Generally prohibited in the luggage are fireworks, sparklers or lighters. A maximum of one lighter per person is permitted, which the passenger must carry.

Depending on the airline, there are further individual regulations. It is best for travelers to inform themselves about the security regulations before departure.
