Safe in the snow

The snow sports season has begun. The bfu - Swiss Council for Accident Prevention shows how accidents can be avoided during winter fun. In addition to an adapted skiing style and wearing a helmet, it recommends the correct adjustment of the ski binding.

Winter sports are among the most popular sporting activities in Switzerland. More than 2.5 million skiers and 370,000 snowboarders can be found at least occasionally on the snowy slopes. Every year, however, more than 65,000 Swiss skiers and snowboarders are injured in such a way that they require medical treatment. As the bfu accident survey shows, the majority of injuries are caused by self-inflicted accidents. Collisions between people account for only slightly more than 6 % of accidents.
Among skiers, the knee is most frequently affected in an accident (37 %), followed by the shoulder and upper arm (19 %) and the lower leg, ankle and foot (16 %). Among snowboarders, more than half of the injuries affect the upper extremities (shoulder to hand).

25 years of bfu ski vignette: Retro spot with James Bond
The ski binding offers not only support, but also protection. Correctly adjusted, it can help prevent injuries. For 25 years, the bfu ski sticker has confirmed that the ski binding has been correctly adjusted by a specialist on the basis of the information provided and checked with a testing device. To mark this anniversary, the bfu is reviving the legendary commercial from the 1990s with James Bond Roger Moore in retro style.

The most important tips from the bfu

  • Don't overestimate yourself: always adjust your speed to your driving ability and visibility conditions.
  • Stop only at the edge of the slope and in clear places.
  • Be considerate of other snow sports enthusiasts.
  • Have the ski binding adjusted and the edges sharpened at a specialist store before the season.
  • Wear a well-fitting snow sports helmet and appropriate clothing (this includes snow sports goggles).
  • Ride as a snowboarder with a wrist guard. This reduces the risk of injury by over 40 %.
