Building systems: driving forward secure networking
Building networking can bring great benefits - but it also harbors security gaps. For this reason, VdS has developed a recognition procedure for smart building specialists.
"Attack of the killer refrigerators", "My toothbrush hacked the Pentagon", "Researchers warn against smart lamps" - these are a few headlines about the frequent security vulnerabilities in smart buildings. The fact that "smart" definitely does not automatically mean "secure" is now known far beyond the industry. On the contrary, networking is constantly creating new risks, some of which were previously completely unknown, as VdS, which specializes in corporate security, writes.
Recognition procedure developed
As every technician knows, more networking always means an increase in the risk of malfunctions and failures. VdS is addressing these critical issues and has therefore developed the VdS 3838 certification procedure for "Smart Building Safety & Security Experts". Based on proven practical knowledge in installation and information technology, these experts would prove their special skills in the holistic secure networking of building systems.
"The VdS-approved specialists reconcile what is technically possible with what is justifiable from a security point of view," emphasizes Sebastian Brose, Head of VdS Product Management in the Products and Companies Business Unit. "In this way, we hope to make an important contribution to closing the still too large and numerous security gaps in this future field - so that smart buildings really are smartly protected."
