Safety before "coolness"!
A total of 51 people were killed and 960 seriously injured in an accident with a motorcycle on Swiss roads last year. TCS observes during the summer time that a large number of motorcycle and scooter riders do not observe certain basic safety rules and neglect their equipment.
The heat of summer is an easy temptation to wear loose clothing and thus to neglect one's own safety. A motorcyclist, who is less protected than a car driver in the event of an accident, should definitely equip himself accordingly. About 80% of collisions involving motorcycle and scooter riders were caused by other road users because the latter did not see or perceive them. When your own life is at stake, TCS recommends refraining from being too "loose" in terms of clothing and equipment, despite the great heat. According to the Federal Roads Office (ASTRA), about 2158 motorcycle and scooter riders were slightly injured and about 960 seriously injured in 2017. 51 motorcyclists were killed, which is 22% of all fatal accidents on Swiss roads.
Mandatory wearing of helmets
Wearing a helmet is mandatory. This also applies to the passenger. The so-called "Full face helmet" offers the best protection, because it protects the whole face and not least the chin area. There are also flip-up helmets, which are very convenient for people who wear glasses, but which should never be worn open during the ride (Danger of death). Another option for particularly hot days are jet helmets. All models are subject to compliance with the ECE-22 standard.
Proper motorcycle clothing
It is important that the leaders of a motorcycle or scooter are aware that the ideal compromise between comfort and safety does not exist. Leather remains the most resistant material to frictional heat in the event of a fall. Motorcycle clothing is usually dark and provides appropriate heat during the summertime. However, there are "perforated", i.e. air-permeable, clothing available for purchase in stores. Specialized stores also offer pants made of reinforced fabric material and Textile jackets with back protectors. TCS recommends carrying a light change of clothes in a backpack or suitcase so you can change after the ride.
Good protection for feet and hands
Unfortunately, injuries to hands and feet usually do not heal 100% and lifelong consequential damage must often be expected. Special gloves for the summer with finger, fist and palm protection are also part of the basic equipment. In France, gloves are compulsory for both the driver of a two-wheeled motorcycle and the passenger. In addition to the hands, the feet are also very exposed to injury in the event of a side impact or a fall. Flip-flops, sandals and light sneakers should be avoided at all costs when riding. TCS recommends that motorcyclists wear shell-reinforced boots (similar to ski boots), which offer the best protection for the feet.
Drive carefully on mountain passes
To escape the summer heat, a trip to higher ground is very tempting. Secondary roads are also very popular for this purpose. The TCS therefore likes to remind you that the roads are not race tracks. The driving style and speed should always be adapted to the driving skills and the road conditions. Great care should be taken especially in tight curves. In addition to the danger of being forced out of the way by an oncoming vehicle, inside curves often obscure the view of oncoming vehicles. Cyclist. To avoid risky overtaking maneuvers, you should also leave the lights on during the day (mandatory).
