Last year, 4096 people were seriously injured on Swiss roads - the highest number for ten years. The number of fatalities stagnated at a high level of 236.
Pedestrians are particularly at risk: 522 were seriously injured last year, 46 were killed. The most significant increase last year was among motorcyclists: 1160 people were seriously injured - 97 more than in the previous year. The trend among e-bike riders continues to be problematic: Here too, the number of serious injuries rose sharply - by 35 to 595.
Critical point in the development
The last five years have shown an unfavorable development in road safety, which has become even more pronounced in the past year. The trend is going in the wrong direction. In order to reduce the number of serious road accidents, Switzerland must implement effective and economical measures more consistently. These measures must focus on infrastructure, vehicle technology and teaching safe behavior.
Barometer has existed since 2017
If you want to solve a problem, you need to know it well. This is why the BFU's safety barometer has been assessing road safety in Switzerland every year since 2017. The latest edition clearly shows that there is still a lot to do.
