Visible and safe through the fall

In the fall months, the risk of accidents increases for all road users. An anticipatory driving style ensures safety. With the Made Visible prevention campaign, the TCS is raising awareness of visibility in traffic. TCS also provides further useful tips on how to get through the fall safely and accident-free.

When the fog creeps over the roads, temperatures drop and it gets dark earlier, special attention is required in traffic. Road users have to adapt to changing conditions. Wet conditions or leaves on the road increase the risk of skidding and the braking distance increases. Puddles and water channels can lead to aquaplaning and falling temperatures can cause ice to form on bridges.

To ensure that drivers get through the fall and winter safely, it is advisable to fit winter tires in October. The winter tires should have at least 4 mm of tread left and should not be older than ten years. The equipment in the car must also be adapted to the season. Snow chains, ice scraper, snow broom, wool blanket and ice spray can now provide valuable services. It is also advisable to check all important car functions, as the car is subject to greater stress during the cold season. If required, the TCS also offers a detailed winter test.

Visibility on the bike and on foot

If you are out and about on your bike in the fall, you should wear bright clothing, preferably with reflective elements. It goes without saying that the lights (white at the front, red at the rear) must work properly. Reflectors at the front, rear and on the pedals provide additional visibility. Tires with tread and sufficient air provide grip even on slippery roads and can prevent falls.

Certain precautions are also recommended for pedestrians in the fall. Good footwear provides support and clothing with reflective elements creates safety. Wearing reflective material, if possible on several parts of the body, ensures that you are recognized early enough so that drivers have time to react. Every second accident could be prevented with an extra second of reaction time. On the website madevisible.swissThe website of the prevention campaign of the same name, which is renewed annually by the TCS, contains numerous suggestions for clothing and accessories that increase visibility at night.

Attention game

In the fall, the risk of unexpected encounters with wild animals increases. To avoid collisions, it is important to adjust your speed and be ready to brake, especially at dusk. If there is an animal on the road or in the immediate vicinity, you should switch on your dipped headlights and sound your horn to scare it away. Dangerous evasive maneuvers should be avoided. If a collision occurs despite these precautions, you should report the accident to the police immediately. They will send the gamekeeper, a hunter or a vet to the scene of the accident. You should never approach an injured animal, but wait at a safe distance for the experts to arrive.
