suissepro symposium "Hazardous Substances

At the 2019 suissepro symposium "Hazardous Substances: An Interdisciplinary Approach", hazardous substances will be viewed from new perspectives and examined in a practical way with a fresh look. You will hear new approaches to dealing with hazardous substances. Well-known people will express their opinions on a wide variety of aspects in the field of occupational safety and health. The speakers will shed light on hazardous substances in everyday work from their specific perspective.

Martin Hafen from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts for Social Work will outline how to achieve the lowest possible risk handling of hazardous substances from a prevention sociological perspective at the symposium "Hazardous Substances: An Interdisciplinary Approach." L. Casey Chosewood (NIOSH, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) will present the Total Worker Health program, which protects health inside and outside the workplace. His practical examples will also come from the world of hazardous substances.

Nanoparticles and enzymes
Modern chemicals are included in health protection, sometimes not. Martin Flückiger, MD addresses the problem by means of Nanoparticles and enzymes. In special situations, special protective measures are necessary. An expert (person to be announced) demonstrates this on the basis of the risk assessment according to the Maternity Protection Ordinance. The weak points of the ordinance will also be addressed.

Formaldehyde
The industrial hygienist Thomas oak Formaldehyde is used as an example to illustrate how to deal with a CMR hazardous substance, an acutely poisonous and allergenic substance can be dealt with. Dorota Losch and Johannes Schulze from the Goethe University Frankfurt a.M. comment on substances that are deliberately taken in order to supposedly work better.

Maternity protection: ergonomic and psychological aspects
Legislation has provided special protection for pregnant and breastfeeding women in the protection of employees. The physiological changes mean that pregnant women are more sensitive to stresses and circumstances associated with working conditions. On the other hand, certain substances, including chemical substances, can have dire effects on the development of the fetus or on the health of the child being breastfed. This special protection is justified and aims at two objectives: the health protection of the mother and the child. Sylvie Praplan presents concrete hints and information on this.

Performance enhancing substances
In today's working environments, many harmful environmental influences, such as cigarette smoke, chemical substances, radiation, etc., have already been reduced or completely avoided through the application of protective measures. At the same time, psychological stress has increased due to the high intensity of work and ever further optimization of work processes. Many no longer feel able to cope with the expectation that employees must always perform 100% or even more, which is accompanied by an increase in cases of psychologically induced illness. Some therefore try to increase their performance through the use of pharmacological agents and thus expose themselves to hazardous substances. Which supposedly performance-enhancing agents exist, which groups of people are particularly at risk, and how the agents affect healthy people from a toxicological point of view will be discussed in this lecture by Dorota Losch and Johannes Schulze are presented. Likewise, lower-risk alternatives for cognitive performance enhancement are pointed out.

After a panel discussion, Martin Hafen David Vernez will reflect on the presentations of the symposium in a synthesis. The conference is multilingual with simultaneous translation in German and French.
