Suva figures: Fewer accidents due to Corona

In 2020, Suva recorded around 430,000 accidents and occupational illnesses. Suva speaks of a decrease compared to the previous year. Because fewer people worked, there were fewer occupational accidents. As fewer activities were possible, there were also fewer leisure accidents.

Insured persons reported a total of 430,000 accidents to Suva in 2020: 10 percent fewer than in the previous year. As fewer people worked and fewer leisure activities were possible, the number of occupational accidents fell by 9.8 percent and the number of leisure accidents by as much as 10.9 percent. In contrast, the number of accidents among those registered as unemployed increased again overall, as the number of unemployed also increased.

Particularly after the lockdown from mid-March 2020, the accident figures fell sharply. Suva then registered almost only half as many accidents as in the previous year, according to the statement. The second wave again led to a decline in reported accidents from October 2020. The sharpest decline in occupational accidents was recorded in aviation, with a drop of 54 percent.

The trend in recreational accidents was similar to that in occupational accidents. Since the closure of the ski areas in March 2020, 22 percent fewer ski accidents have occurred. Since football was no longer played for a long time, there was also a marked decrease of 37 percent for the year as a whole compared to the previous year. In contrast, bicycle accidents increased again, as excursions in April 2020 were again frequently favored by good weather. These would have increased by 21 percent compared to the previous year.
