Symposium Bypass 2020
On October 30, 1967, Prof. Gazi M. Yaşargil performed the first brain bypass on a patient at the University Hospital Zurich - and thus went down in the history of neurosurgery. Today, neurosurgery would be unthinkable without this procedure. In the case of circulatory disorders of the brain, arteries that otherwise supply the scalp or other regions of the brain are connected to blood vessels in which the blood flow alone is insufficient. This technology has opened up completely new treatment options for strokes, Moya-Moya disease or the treatment of other blood vessel disorders.

At the international symposium Bypass2020 on University Hospital Zurich some 150 neurosurgeons from around the world will look back on history, share the latest knowledge on the Brain Bypass-surgery and venture a look into the future.
The program of the three-day event includes diagnostics, Surgical techniques and current studies as well as a science slam in which young physicians present their research projects in a competition on stage. A highlight of the conference is the Honorary Lecture by Prof. Gazi M. Yaşargil. Finally, a special symposium will be dedicated to research on "Hibernating Brain", an artificial "hibernation" of the brain and its usefulness in current medicine and for space travel.
