Technology prevents personal contact at work

The more digital our working day becomes, the less we interact personally with colleagues and customers.

Technologies such as email and chat programs make everyday working life easier - but we pay a price for it: according to a Study by HR specialist Randstad personal contact with colleagues and customers decreases.

The study surveyed employees from 34 countries around the world. 60% were of the opinion that their interactions with work contacts are less direct thanks to technology.

47% of those surveyed stated that they feel less connected to their colleagues due to the omnipresence of technology in their workplace. Indian employees appear to be particularly affected, with 71% complaining of a lack of interaction with colleagues. At 46%, Switzerland is just at the average of the countries surveyed.

And this is not what employees want: 89% stated that a face-to-face meeting is the best way to interact with someone.

This decrease in direct interaction with other people at work can have an impact on mental health. Experts therefore advise employees to counteract loneliness directly - for example by having lunch and coffee breaks together, or even going to the office next door in person instead of sending an email.
