Tips for smooth and safe traffic

On Swiss freeways, there is a network of displays with which information can be passed on to road users. These variable message displays are primarily used to provide information about large-scale detours and hazard warnings. Now they are to be used increasingly to preventively improve driving behavior and thus the flow of traffic.

Every driver can decisively influence the flow of traffic and the occurrence of accidents with his or her own behavior. Notorious driving on the left, driving too close, tailgating or accidents caused by distraction slow down traffic and can lead to traffic jams. The Federal Roads Office (Astra) is implementing measures to keep traffic flowing longer, even during peak hours, and to reduce the number of hours of congestion. This should make travel and delivery times on the roads more predictable again.

Change text displays on the highways

In addition to dynamic speed control adapted to traffic volumes, targeted bottleneck elimination through capacity expansion and the reuse of breakdown lanes, the increased use of variable text displays on the highways is another supporting measure. The text displays that are to be increasingly displayed are:

  • "Drive on the right, overtake on the left"
  • "Distance = Safety"
  • "Form emergency lanes in traffic jams"

This information is intended to sensitize road users to adapt their driving behavior to the situation in order to reduce accidents and congestion times. The displayed texts are related to road traffic. They can vary from canton to canton and are only displayed intermittently so that they remain highly visible.
