Security of supply guaranteed in 2025
Recently, the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission ElCom presented the latest results of its calculations on supply security 2025. This shows that no immediate measures are currently necessary. However, it recommends making preparations for stress situations.
Based on the results of its latest study on system adequacy in 2025 - on security of supply - ElCom concludes that it does not currently need to propose any measures to the Federal Council under Article 9 of the Electricity Supply Act. For a probable scenario for the year 2025, the supply in Switzerland is guaranteed. This also takes into account individual stressors.
Preparatory and relieving measures serve
According to the calculations, the situation becomes much more tense in stress scenarios. For example, if the French power plant fleet were only available to a limited extent and the two large nuclear power plants Leibstadt and Gösgen were also out of operation. Although the probability of this scenario occurring is low, ElCom recommends taking preparatory measures for such a case. In particular, against the background that a stress scenario could occur at short notice. One such preparatory measure could be a strategic reserve, for example, as ElCom writes.
Assuming that security of supply in the winter half-year will be based on increasing imports in the future, the probability increases that emergency measures will have to be taken. For this reason, ElCom suggests that a substantial proportion of energy should continue to be produced in Switzerland in winter.
In addition to the System Adequacy 2025 report, ElCom also presented its Activity Report, as well as the Security of Supply Report and the Quality of Supply Report at its annual media conference. All reports are available on the website of ElCom viewable.
