Video surveillance: so that the full potential can be exploited

Video surveillance systems are now very sophisticated and can record actions and people in detail - even in poor lighting conditions. To make the most of the potential in forensic evaluation, a professionally developed concept is needed.

Video surveillance systems are getting better and better. Over the last five years, a lot has changed for the better in terms of imaging, image rendering (light sensitivity, data compression, sharpness and detail rendering). From a police and forensic perspective, the video image that can be used for law enforcement continues to grow in importance. But: Bigger and faster does not always mean better!

Old structures and ways of working are often transferred to a new technology. However, it is more goal-oriented to adapt these to the new technologies. In order to make optimal use of the new possibilities of a camera system, the operator must consciously ask himself what is to be recorded and for what purpose before mounting and adjusting a camera.

For example, the only way to protect against burglary is with an active, alarm-triggering video system with perimeter protection. However, this concept is of no use against a robbery, because here a camera is often only a documenting component within the overall security strategy.

It is essential to consider the choice of the protection target, the type of crime to be expected, the possible modi operandi (crime process and perpetrator behavior) and who could be a potential perpetrator. If a burglary at night has a higher probability of occurrence than a theft during the day, the camera must be able to produce high-contrast images without motion blur in low light conditions.

Camera features

For each application and protection goal, the following camera characteristics should therefore be carefully examined: Detail reproduction, shooting angle or image distortion, contrast behavior and color fastness, light sensitivity and image noise.

Only when these points are clearly defined can a specific camera model that meets the requirements fully exploit its benefits.

The basic setting of a camera does not usually match the specific protection target requirement without individual adaptation. Adapted or optimized settings with an optimal recording result serve not only the operator as a potential injured party, but also law enforcement in the clarification of crimes.

Dear readers, you will find out what else needs to be considered in connection with video surveillance systems in our special issue Video Security Special, which will be published on August 25.

In the print edition Video Surveillance, our expert authors also take a close look at surveillance cameras: the results reveal interesting and useful aspects for you. In addition to other topics, SicherheitsForum also publishes a market and manufacturer overview in the special issue.

Here it goes to the Subscription order.
