Fewer accidents in the construction industry
The number of accidents in the construction industry is decreasing year by year. However, the situation is not so rosy when it comes to fatalities.
The prevention measures seem to be working: The number of occupational accidents in the construction industry is decreasing year by year and this year reached a new low of around 190 victims per 1,000 employees.
However, the Association of Master Builders complains about the increase in leisure-time accidents among its employees: every year, 118 people out of every 1,000 employees have an accident during their leisure time. This means that every third construction worker who has an accident in the course of a year has not sustained his injuries during working hours, but in his free time. The association therefore urges its employees to observe safety rules during leisure activities.
An increase was also recorded in the number of fatal occupational accidents. In 2014, 23 workers lost their lives on construction sites. The Unia trade union is therefore calling for employees on construction sites to be better protected in bad weather conditions such as heavy rain, snow, ice and heat.
