How safe are head-up displays?

Do head-up displays in vehicles contribute to safety - or do they even interfere with it? TCS and BFU investigated this question in a test.

Not all head-up displays make driving safer.

Inattention and distraction at the wheel are among the most common causes of accidents. In Switzerland, thousands of accidents are caused every year by inattentive and distracted drivers. Various driver assistance systems, such as head-up displays, promise support that does not distract the driver's concentration from the road. In cooperation with the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (bfu), TCS tested and compared seven such systems.

The conclusion: Although the results for the standard systems varied greatly, four of the five test products are at least "recommendable". The retrofit systems, on the other hand, were less convincing. The bottom line is that good HUDs can increase safety, while inadequate HUDs actually harbor additional risks.
