Winter sports regions have highest accident rates

There are major regional differences when it comes to accidents: While Graubünden has the highest sports accident rate, the people of Aargau, for example, have particularly frequent accidents while playing ball. This is shown by the latest accident statistics.

Accident risk football: Ball sport accidents lead the statistics in all cantons.

The Accident statistics of the Swiss Statistical Office for Accident Insurance (SSUV) now offers a breakdown of accident figures by canton. This shows large differences between the regions. This is not surprising: the place of residence has a particular influence on people's leisure activities and thus also on their accident behavior during this time. Thus, more leisure accidents tend to occur in the mountain cantons than in the lowlands. The canton of Jura leads the ranking: 148 leisure-time accidents occur per 1000 employees of Jura companies. Employees of companies in the cantons of Glarus and Graubünden are in second place with 142 accidents per 1000 employees. The risk of leisure accidents appears to be lowest in the cantons of Geneva (111), Zug (113) and Ticino (117).

Grisonians most frequently have accidents while playing sports

Many of the leisure accidents in the winter sports regions of Jura, Glarus and Graubünden involve sports accidents. This is because these cantons are also at the top of this ranking: Graubünden records 67 sports accidents per 1000 employees, 29 of which involve snow sports. Glarus follows with 65 and Jura with 61 accidents per 1000 full employees. In the canton of Glarus hiking accidents and in the canton of Jura ice hockey accidents are above average.

Once again, the accident insurers register the fewest accidents during sports activities among employees from Ticino (35 per 1,000 fulltime employees) and Geneva (38). The low figure in the canton of Ticino can be explained by the high number of cross-border commuters. If they have an accident during their free time in Italy, the Italian health insurers cover the medical costs.

Aargauer have accidents mainly during ball sports

Despite the numerous snow sports and hiking accidents in the mountain cantons, 1.5 times more ball sports accidents occur than winter sports accidents. According to accident statistics, people in Aargau have twice as many accidents during ball sports as during snow sports activities, most frequently while playing soccer (27 percent).

"Imported" and "exported" accidents

A minority of cantons record significantly more non-local than local accident victims. This ranking is headed by the canton of Obwalden, where 23 percent more foreigners than locals are involved in accidents. It is followed by Graubünden and Appenzell Innerrhoden, also with more "imported" than "local" accidents. In contrast, the people of Appenzell Ausserrhoden have almost as many accidents away from home as at home, "exporting" 48 out of every 100 accidents to other cantons. The people of Nidwalden and Zug are also among the Swiss who quite frequently have accidents in other cantons, while the accidents of the people of Valais and Grisons mainly occur in their own canton.
