We sit too much

We sit for an average of 4 to 5 hours a day. The Federal Office of Public Health sees this as a cause for concern.

The Federal Office of Public Health warns of the negative effects of sedentary behavior. An hour of the BAG shows that in Switzerland people between 15 and 74 years sit on average 4 to 5 hours a day. Every sixth person even reaches 8.5 hours a day.

This is too much and has negative effects on the entire body. The bad news here is that even if people meet the recommendation of 2.5 hours of moderate exercise per week, they cannot compensate for the negative effects of sedentary behavior.

The only remedy is to stand up regularly and occasionally work standing up. The FOPH therefore recommends that sedentary work be interrupted periodically. Employers should also become active: In the area of workplace health promotion, they should help to ensure that their employees move regularly and, for example, procure standing desks.

This is also supported by the National Program Nutrition and Physical Activity (NPEB), which will run until the end of 2016.
