With the shutdown of the 3G network in Switzerland by the end of the year, a switch to 4G or 5G is necessary to ensure the functionality of the eCall system. The shutdown of the old networks has a direct impact on integrated emergency communication: only newer vehicles that are compatible with the current technologies can continue to use this system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

eCall - a system to save lives<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Since March 31, 2018, the emergency call service has been mandatory for cars and trucks registered in Europe and Switzerland. In the event of serious accidents, this system automatically establishes a voice connection between the vehicle occupants and an emergency call center. The TCS handled more than 2,700 such calls in 2024. In the event of a collision, especially if the airbags are deployed, the vehicle automatically transmits important information: Time and location of the accident, drive type and number of occupants wearing seat belts. Voice communication enables the emergency services to better assess the situation and adapt the rescue measures accordingly. eCall can also be activated manually by an occupant using an SOS button, so that emergency communication is guaranteed even if the alarm is not triggered automatically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The decisive factor is the year of manufacture of the vehicle<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n

Models manufactured before 2018 in particular may be affected by the shutdown of the 3G network. Some manufacturers offer the possibility to check on their website whether a vehicle is affected and whether updates are available to continue using the eCall system. Authorized dealers and workshops can also provide this information. Vehicles equipped exclusively with 3G modules can no longer use the eCall system. No updates are available for some older models. This means that the installed emergency systems are no longer functional. Retrofit solutions are available on the market, for example adapters for 12 V sockets (cigarette lighter). However, in order for the calls to be forwarded to the emergency numbers stored in the phone, these devices usually need to be connected to a cell phone. However, newer vehicles that are compatible with 4G or 5G can still use eCall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What to do in an emergency<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n
\n

In the event of an accident or emergency situation, help can be reached by calling the following emergency numbers: Police 117, fire department 118, ambulance 144 and general emergency number 112 (valid throughout the European Union). In addition, TCS members can make geolocalized emergency calls via the TCS app, which can be used from anywhere, for example on the ski slopes or on hiking tours. The app is free of charge and automatically transmits the location when a call is made within Switzerland. This ensures rapid assistance in the event of a breakdown or accident.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
