In 2017, there were 230 accidents on Swiss roads\u00a0Traffic fatalities<\/a> and 3654 serious injuries. The recently published SINUS Report 2018 (Safety level and road traffic accidents) from the bfu shows that behavioral errors still cause the majority of serious road accidents.<\/p>\n

Distraction: three serious injuries every day<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inattentive or distracted road users are often responsible for accidents with serious injuries or fatalities on Swiss roads - on average there are three serious injuries every day as a result. Distraction is not a gender-specific phenomenon: it is equally common among men and women who cause accidents. However, there are differences according to age group: Among 18- to 24-year-olds<\/a> plays Distraction<\/a> play a significantly greater role than with older drivers.<\/p>\n

Almost as many serious accidents occur due to failure to give way - this is another reason why there are around three serious injuries per day. In fact, it is the most common cause of accidents in built-up areas. Drivers are responsible for 75 % of serious accidents caused by failure to give way. Influence behavior<\/strong><\/p>\n

The majority of accidents can therefore be attributed to behavioral errors. In contrast, defects in vehicles or infrastructure play a subordinate role according to accident logging by the police. Infrastructure defects in particular are rarely the cause of accidents, but have great potential for prevention. In order to risky behavior<\/a> To curb road accidents and optimize the infrastructure, the experts at the bfu rely on campaigns, training and advice - based on the latest results of accident and prevention research. One important finding is that an optimal road infrastructure has a positive influence on people's behavior on the roads, for example through comprehensible speed limits.
