In Switzerland, around 16,000 people suffer a stroke each year. In the case of a Stroke<\/a> the blood supply to an area of the brain is restricted or interrupted, causing brain cells to become damaged and even die. Five out of six Brain strokes<\/a> are caused by a blocked blood vessel, the other cases arise due to a brain hemorrhage. A quarter of those affected die within a short time. About half suffer mild to severe permanent impairments, whereas the last quarter do not suffer any permanent consequences.<\/p>\n

Recognize a stroke
\n<\/strong>The symptoms of a stroke can vary widely: paralysis, impaired vision, speech, comprehension and balance, dizziness, nausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n

If you suspect a stroke, ask the person to smile, repeat a sentence, and raise his or her arms. If only half of the face moves, speech is slurred, or the person cannot raise both arms, it is probably a stroke.<\/p>\n

In such a case, immediate action is called for, because every second counts in a stroke. The longer a stroke is not properly recognized and treated, the more serious the consequences can be.<\/p>\n

How to react?
\n<\/strong>Immediately call 144 emergency and describe the Symptoms<\/a>. If the person is unconscious, place them in a stable lateral position. If they are conscious, they should lie down on a hard surface with their upper body slightly raised. It is important that the affected person does not eat or drink anything, because it could possibly be that the swallowing reflexes are impaired. Talk to the person and reassure them while waiting for the ambulance.<\/p>\n
