Sugar damages immune system around 40%

The consumer organization foodwatch has accused the sugar lobby of using a disinformation campaign to conceal the health effects of sugar consumption and thus prevent unwelcome political initiatives. Especially in the time of Corona, the immune system must be strengthened and not massively weakened.

Sugar associations such as the German "WVZ" or the Swiss "IG Erfrischungsgetränke" promote obesity and type 2 diabetes with false statements. Among other things, they claim that sugar neither makes you fat nor sick, which is an outright lie. © Depositphotos/bit245

The Wirtschaftliche Vereinigung Zucker (WVZ) in Germany, for example, claims that sugar neither makes you fat nor sick. Political measures such as a Soft drink tax are also not suitable for curbing obesity. Moreover, only the calorie balance is decisive, the source of the calories is irrelevant. foodwatch criticized these statements as false and outdated. This is proven by current scientific findings and the Comments of institutions such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

"The sugar industry is doing what the tobacco companies used to do: using hair-raising false statements to deceive the public in order to prevent or delay unwelcome political measures. How much more scientific evidence is independent science supposed to provide so that the Sugar-preachers stop with their health-endangering fairy tales? Politicians should no longer believe a word the Sugar Association says - because facts don't seem to interest them," said Luise Molling of foodwatch.

These are the most absurd statements of the sugar lobby:

  • Sugar makes neither fat nor ill: The sugar association WVZ claims on its website that there is "no scientific evidence" that "sugar is responsible for the development of obesity and non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus." "Sugar per se" makes "not sick", it also says in a brochure.

Truth: According to the German Diabetes Association, the relationship between Sugar consumption and obesity as well as diabetes risk as "assured. Drinking sodas and other sugar drinks is "associated with weight gain or obesity," also confirms the German Nutrition Society. According to the WHO, sugar drinks are even one of the "major causes" of obesity and diabetes.. According to foodwatch, there is no longer any question of a lack of evidence for the harmful effects of sugar consumption on health.

  • Taxes are ineffective: The WVZ claims on its website that "regulatory measures such as taxes (...) are not appropriate measures to solve the complex obesity problem".

"Too much Sugar makes it possible for the Immune system difficult to fight pathogens. Already shortly after consumption the Immune system weakened by a full 40 percent. Likewise robs Sugar Vitamin C, which white blood cells need to fight viruses and bacteria."

Truth: Experience from numerous countries shows that a soft drink or sugar tax does have a steering effect. In Great Britain, after the introduction of a Soft drink tax the sugar content in soft drinks and other soft drinks has fallen dramatically. In the meantime, for example, one Fanta in the UK now only contains half as much sugar as a Fanta in Germany (4.6 instead of 9.1). In the UK as well as in Mexico, Finland, Berkeley and France, sugar beverage consumption fell significantly after the introduction of a tax. Not least because of these international experiences confirmed the WHO: "Evidence suggests that a tax on sugar drinks that results in a 20 percent price increase reduces consumption by about 20 percent, which prevents the development of obesity and diabetes."

The consumer protection organization foodwatch and numerous other professional societies have been calling for years for political measures against malnutrition, including an EU-wide mandatory nutritional value traffic light, restrictions on food advertising aimed at children, binding standards for school and kindergarten meals, and tax incentives for the food industry to develop healthier recipes - for example, through a soda or sugar tax.

What the Federal Council, the BAG, the SBU or your doctor and pharmacist unfortunately too often forgets - and this applies not only in the "Coronavirus Time": support your immune system with a low-sugar diet.

At SAFETY-PLUS 3/2019 we have the interview "Do carbohydrates make you sicker than sugar?" with the alternative practitioner Klaus Wührer on bread, in which it becomes clear that all carbohydrates are also sugar!

Even the WHO, with its subcommission CODEX ALIMENTARIUS and its Codex Committee on Sugar (CCS) predominantly by lobbying experts from Coca Cola, Nestlé, Südzucker etc., to prescribe sugary "food garbage" as a supposedly healthy diet with absolutely irrelevant vitamin & mineral content to the whole world.
